- 1995 Isle of Man Senior TT

In 1995, during a test programme at Castle Coombe race circuit (renowned for its irregular surface), the development rider Shaun Harris acquired so much confidence with the motorcycle's handling that he suggested taking part in the forth coming Isle of Man TT.

With only a few weeks to prepare the race would be treated as an extension to the test session that would yield valuable data for the development of the future production model. The team was hopeful that with Shaun Harris's previous racing experience of the Isle of Man we would obtain a good result.

The 750 Prototype was entered in the Formula One and Senior TT races. This, the second prototype, managed to tip the scales at a mere 160kg despite being based around the heavy oil-cooled GSXR 750 M engine which in 1995 was outdated by its lighter water-cooled competitors. The chassis consisted of a combination of machined and fabricated steel and aluminium components without the use of exotic materials such as titanium or carbon fibre. The racing prototype achieved its light weight due to its compact frame design.

Practice sessions on the Isle of Man circuit soon put the team on a steep learning curve. Most of build up to the races was spent searching for a set-up that could cope with the vastly varying conditions of the most demanding road circuit in the world.

Having raced for several years at the TT races Shaun Harris's experience and in-depth knowledge of the circuit proved invaluable and the team was making good progress in the first week of practice sessions.

Then disaster struck, debris on the circuit caused a massive rear wheel slide, which forced Shaun Harris to crash. Fortunately the rider was unhurt but the motorcycle suffered heavy damage from the violent high side that sent it barrel rolling along the tarmac. This was a major set back for the team, which at the time had limited resources on the island. Despite this, the Tryphonos motorcycle was back on the circuit just a couple of days later, having missed two valuable practice sessions.

The Formula One race day arrived and the team were hopeful of a good result. But the race for the Tryphonos team was cut short because of an electrical failure. Water trapped in the ignition module from the previous days wet practice session, resulted in a break down on the isolated mountain section, leaving the rider stranded for the duration of the race.

Finally the day of the Isle of Man Senior TT race rewarded the Tryphonos team with a creditable 11th place (lapping at 116.87mph) from a field of 86 riders.
